AEO and GEO checklist for AI search visibility
A practical checklist for answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization across crawl access, content, schema, citations, and llms.txt.
Use this AEO and GEO checklist when you want your website to appear in AI answers, recommendations, comparisons, and summaries.
Crawl access
- Homepage returns
200. - Important pages are public.

- Sitemap exists and includes important pages.
- Canonical URLs are stable.

Content extractability
- Main content appears in the initial HTML.

- Important facts are not only inside images.
- Internal links use descriptive text.
- The page has enough body copy to understand the topic.
Answer readiness
- The page targets a specific prompt or topic.
- The direct answer appears near the top.
- Definitions are plain and unambiguous.
- Comparisons name the compared options.
- Claims include enough context to stand alone.
- FAQs answer real questions, not invented keyword variations.
Structured data
- JSON-LD is valid.
- Organization schema identifies the publisher.
- Article pages include article schema.
- Product, service, or software pages use the correct schema type.
- FAQ schema only appears when the visible page includes those FAQs.
- Dates, names, URLs, and logos match the visible content.
LLM-specific files
llms.txtexists at the site root.- It links to the best pages, not every page.
- Descriptions are short and factual.
- Markdown versions exist for docs or long resources when possible.
Accept: text/markdownworks where it makes sense.
Citation quality
- Paragraphs can be quoted without losing meaning.
- The page includes concrete nouns instead of vague claims.
- The brand, category, and use case are named clearly.
- Data, dates, and examples are easy to verify.
- Author and publisher are visible.
Agent readiness
- API documentation is discoverable.
- API catalog exists where relevant.
- OAuth discovery exists for authenticated APIs.
- MCP server card exists if the product exposes tools.
- Agent skills manifest exists if agents can perform named actions.
- Commerce discovery exists if agents can buy or unlock resources.
Maintenance
- New strategic pages are added to sitemap.
- Best strategic pages are added to
llms.txt. - Old claims are updated.
- Broken internal links are removed.
- Pages are rescanned after launches.
