My website ranks in Google but not ChatGPT: why AI answers behave differently
Ranking in Google does not guarantee that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity will mention or cite your website. AI answers use different signals, formats, and source choices.
A website can rank well in Google and still be missing from ChatGPT answers.
That feels strange because traditional SEO trains us to think visibility means blue-link ranking. AI answers work differently. They may retrieve a smaller source set, summarize multiple pages, prefer pages with clearer answer structure, or cite third-party sources instead of your page.
Google ranking helps. It is not the whole game.
Google rank is not the same as AI visibility
Classic search asks:
Which pages should be listed for this query?
AI search often asks:
Which sources help answer this prompt?
Which brands should be named?
Which pages are safe to cite?
Those are related questions, but they are not identical.
A page can rank in Google because it has authority, backlinks, and keyword relevance. The same page may be ignored by an AI answer if it does not contain a direct answer, has unclear facts, is hard to extract, or is less useful than a competitor page for the exact prompt.
Check whether the AI prompt matches the Google query
People do not ask ChatGPT the same way they search Google.
Google query:
ai seo tool
AI prompt:
What are the best AI SEO tools for a small B2B SaaS team that wants to know whether ChatGPT can cite its website?
That longer prompt changes the source set. It includes audience, use case, budget, product category, and desired outcome.
If your page ranks for the short query but does not answer the longer prompt, an AI system may choose a more specific page.
Make sure the page is extractable
Run:
curl -L https://example.com/page
Then check whether the output contains:
- the direct answer
- product or service category
- target audience
- examples
- comparison language
- pricing or next-step details
- links to deeper pages
If your Google-ranking page is mostly navigation, scripts, vague marketing copy, or visual cards, it may not be a strong AI source.
Look at who AI cites instead
For each prompt where your site is absent, record:
- brands mentioned
- URLs cited
- page types cited
- whether the cited page is a competitor, publisher, review site, or documentation page
- what the cited page says more clearly than yours
You may discover that AI systems prefer:
- comparison articles
- buyer guides
- documentation
- glossary pages
- pricing pages
- review roundups
- FAQ pages
- third-party lists
That tells you what kind of page is missing.
Rewrite the page for answer usefulness
Do not stuff the prompt into the page twenty times. Add the missing answer structure.
A strong AI-visible page usually has:
- a direct answer near the top
- concrete definitions
- product category language
- use cases
- limitations
- examples
- comparison points
- current dates when freshness matters
- schema that matches the visible content
For example, if the prompt is:
best AI SEO checker for SaaS
Your page should make it obvious whether the product is an AI SEO checker, who it is for, what it checks, and when it is not the right fit.
Do not ignore third-party influence
Sometimes AI systems do not cite your site because third-party pages define the category better.
That can include:
- review sites
- app directories
- analyst blogs
- GitHub repositories
- partner pages
- industry newsletters
If those pages mention competitors and not you, your own page may not be enough. You may need directory cleanup, partner pages, review profiles, or PR that creates credible third-party context.
Track AI prompts separately from SEO keywords
Keep two lists:
- SEO keywords you rank for in Google
- AI prompts where you want to be mentioned or cited
They will overlap, but they should not be identical.
For each AI prompt, track:
- provider
- answer date
- whether your brand is mentioned
- whether your domain is cited
- cited competitor domains
- page you expected to win
- action needed
That turns the problem from "ChatGPT ignores us" into a specific content and crawlability roadmap.
Run both checks
Use traditional SEO tools to understand Google rankings. Use NoticeMeAI and the AI Rank Checker to see whether AI systems can crawl, understand, mention, and cite the pages that should win inside generated answers.
