What does ChatGPT say about my brand? How to check without fooling yourself
To understand what ChatGPT says about your brand, test branded, category, comparison, and problem prompts across providers, then record mentions, citations, sentiment, and wrong facts.
"What does ChatGPT say about my brand?" sounds simple, but one prompt is not enough.
If you only ask:
Tell me about ExampleCo.
you will get a narrow branded answer. That does not tell you whether buyers discover you, whether AI systems recommend competitors, whether your facts are correct, or whether your website is being cited.
You need a small prompt set.
Test four types of prompts
Use prompts that match different stages of buyer behavior.
1. Branded prompts
These check whether AI systems understand your company.
What is ExampleCo?
What does ExampleCo do?
Who is ExampleCo for?
How much does ExampleCo cost?
What are the pros and cons of ExampleCo?
Record wrong facts, outdated details, and whether the answer cites your official website.
2. Category prompts
These check whether you appear when the buyer does not know your name yet.

3. Comparison prompts
These show how AI systems position you against alternatives.

4. Problem prompts
These reveal whether your brand appears when someone describes the pain, not the category.
ChatGPT can't find my website
AI gives wrong information about my company
how do I know if Perplexity cites my site
my website ranks in Google but not AI answers
This is where high-intent discovery often happens. People describe the problem in their own words.
Run the same prompts across providers
Do not check only one AI system.
Run the prompt set across the providers that matter to your audience. For many companies, that means some mix of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI experiences.
For each run, record:
- provider
- date
- prompt
- answer summary
- whether your brand was mentioned
- whether your domain was cited
- cited URLs
- competitors mentioned
- wrong or stale facts
- sentiment
The date matters because answers change.
Do not personalize the test too much
Personal context can influence answers. For cleaner tracking:
- use the same prompt wording each time
- run prompts in a fresh chat when possible
- avoid giving the model your preferred answer
- save the answer and citations
- test monthly or after major site changes
You are trying to measure visibility, not persuade one chat session.
Separate mentions from citations
A brand mention means the AI named you.
A citation means the AI used your website as a source.
They are different outcomes.
You can be mentioned without being cited, which means the model knows the brand but uses another source. You can be cited without being recommended, which means your page influenced the answer but did not win the recommendation.
Track both.
Turn findings into actions
The results usually create one of five tasks:
- correct wrong facts on your site and third-party profiles
- create missing answer pages
- improve pages that should be cited
- update pricing, comparison, or category copy
- add important pages to sitemap and
llms.txt
Do not treat every missing mention as a content problem. Sometimes it is a crawlability problem. Sometimes it is a source quality problem. Sometimes competitors simply have a better page for that prompt.
Use a repeatable brand visibility check
NoticeMeAI's AI Rank Checker helps you test prompts across AI providers and see where your brand and domain appear. Pair that with a site scan when the answer is wrong, stale, or missing your official source.
